SHRC raps Water Board for polluted water supply

Friday, April 8th, 2011

State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) acting chairman Kakamanu Peda Peri Reddy has directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) managing director M Jagadeeshwar to submit by April 28, a comprehensive report on the supply of contaminated water. SHRC also directed the board to constitute a special officer to look into the issue.

On behalf of the Joint Action for Water Forum, practicing advocate Megha Rani Agarwal had filed a petition in the SHRC and submitted a comprehensive report on supply of contaminated water tested by a private laboratory.

Speaking to mediamen, Agarwal said it is the Water Board’s responsibility to ensure good quality and healthy drinking water which contains minimal amounts of chlorine, minerals and other inorganic compounds such as calcium. “The Board has totally failed to fulfil their responsibility due to which the public at large, more particularly residents of the Old City are suffering from water borne diseases,” she added.

Responding to the comprehensive report on contaminated water supply, which was tested by a prominent laboratory, SHRC directed M Jagadeeswar to submit a comprehensive report on contaminated water supply to the Old City.

Old City up in arms over coloured water

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Complaints from city residents over supply of yellowish-coloured drinking water have flooded the ‘metro customer care’ (MCC), run by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). Most of the complaints were received from slum areas located in the Azampura, Bahadurpura, Goshamahal, Charminar and Rasoolpura areas.

A resident from Azampura, Shaik Abdul Saleem lodgded a complaint with the Water Board officials about 10 days ago that he has been getting coloured water for the past few days. He claimed that despite boiling the water, the colour did not go away. Saleem even handed over a bottle of water to the officials at Goshamahal.

A week ago, about 30 to 40 residents from Charminar descended on the Water Board office and complained about the colour water. They claimed two persons had fallen sick after drinking the water. On an average, the MCC (toll-free no. 155313) has been getting 60 to 70 complaints per day about the supply of coloured water.

All the complaints have been forwarded to the Water Board’s `quality assurance & testing’ (QA&T) wing to conduct the tests. The QA&T wing officials have also visited the Osmansagar and Himayathsagar reservoirs (the main drinking water sources for the twin cities) and collected samples.

“Our preliminary inquiry states that the yellowish colour is due to vegetation and the trees submerged in the reservoir area. However, all the chemical parameters and bacteriological analysis show the water is no way harmful to human beings and is fit for consumption. But we are still making efforts to minimise the yellowish colour,” said a senior technical official in the QA&T wing.
